About SLabsResearch™
SLabsResearch™ was created to help overcome some of the barriers to data integration in drug discovery. Although a number of excellent tools have become widely available for capturing, storing and analyzing drug discovery experiment data, there have been very few tools which attempt to facilitate the integration and synthesis of knowledge generated at each phase of drug discovery.
Major barriers to the successful integration of drug discovery data are due to the complexity of the experiment platforms used across the wide variety of scientific disciplines. A large amount of significant data reside in widely distributed (invisible) "islands" of structured and semi-structured and unstructured repositories. In addition, through connections to the World Wide Web, scientists now have unprecedented access to research knowledge available in the scientific literature and public research data repositories. As these resources explode in size and breadth, finding relevant data and knowledge will continue to present a time consuming and error prone process.
SLabsResearch™ integrates two significant technologies that have only recently become mature enough for the research enterprise: Semantic Web technologies and search engines. Semantic technologies with the integration of formal ontologies provides the basis for bridging the connections between data repositories by using a specification for data semantics that captures the scientific context for the data. Search engines provide a rapid mechanism for discovering and retrieving data distributed throughout the organization. Together these technologies allow research scientists to discover, retrieve and integrate data available within and outside the organization, and complement the existing solutions that capture and manage data in databases, file systems and web sites.
By working to solve the problems in drug discovery data integration using SLabsResearch™, we believe that research organizations can achieve significant gains in research productivity, increased re-use of organizational scientific knowledge and produce better informed decisions.
Semantic Laboratories provides IT and research computing products with integrated consulting services. Services include custom integration, analysis and informatics development to support the drug discovery data solutions and research intelligence platforms available from both commercial and open-source bioinformatics, cheminformatics and pharmacoinformatics platforms.
